Chris had been surprised by her nephew’s request for a Longest Night present. Usually Roy asked for books, books and more books. Of course he had asked for those too but he had asked for a telescope.

Knowing nothing about how those worked, and hoping he didn’t want it in order to spy on his ‘sisters’ as they got ready for work - he was ten now and was starting to notice little things about the girls - Chris had found a few experts in the field of astronomy. She had come to the Longest Night celebration well armed with the scope and a few books. However, she kept the scope and the lone astronomy book well hidden until the very last moment.

“A telescope!” Roy cried loudly enough to be heard on the moon he so wanted to look at. “Thank you!” His enthusiastic hug nearly knocked her over.

“Glad you like it, Roy-boy.” Chris ruffled his hair.

“Come on, Aunt Chris! We have to use it now!” Roy caught her hand, dragging her past her girls who tried to hide their laughs. Roy had the telescope tucked under his arms.

He would hear no protests, herding her unerringly out into the cold night air. Above them stars twinkled in a crystalline sky. Roy must have been reading up on telescopes in the library because he had no problems setting his up. While winter blew up her skirts, tickling things best left untickled by frigid wind, Chris rubbed her arms as Roy rattled off astronomy tidbits that meant absolutely nothing to her. He might as well be speaking Xingese.

“Look, look, look!” Roy waved his arms nearly knocking his scope over.

Chris obeyed, not sure what she was looking at. Roy excitedly explained the myth and legend behind the constellation she was apparently looking at. Realizing she was going to have a lot of long cold nights ahead of her thanks to this gift, Chris sighed inwardly. Ah, well, if it made Roy this happy, it was worth it.
