weight off - week 28

As soon as I went off the narcotics (and as much as my arm hurts now I wish I had some) I gained back 5 pounds. I have no idea. With my schedule now, I have a diabetic shake in the morning and one for lunch with a piece of fruit and some yogart. Maybe I'm not eating enough and my body is in starvation mode.

Overall, it's depressing. I can't even go swimming. I can walk so long as it's even ground (jarring makes the arm scream). i guess i could pace the building I work in for exercise. not sure where the ipod went. mom cleaned up my living room and doesn't remember where she put it.

I saw an article that I didn't copy the link to but it was stating that grilling helps us lose weight and that's mostly because we're NOT putting heavy sauces and what not on our food that way and letting spice and flame doing the seasoning. So here, have three basic rubs that are lo-cal and could be good on meat or veggies.

from weight watchers

Sweet and Spicy dry rub

3 tbs dark brown sugar
1 tbs chili powder
1 tbs cumin
1 tbs paprika
2 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper

Combine and store in an airtight container for up to 2 months

La Kama rub

1 tbs ground ginger
1 tbs ground black pepper
2 tsp tumeric
1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg

Combine all the spices and store in an airtight container

Note – from the Healing Spice book, this is the most common blend of spices in Morocco next to Ras-el-hanout, used in tagine cooking, good for chicken and lamb

Rosemary Barbecue rub

2 tbs dried rosemary
2 tbs black peppercorns
2 tbs sea salt
2 tbs sweet paprika

Mix together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. (Note the Healing Spice book didn’t mention cracking the peppercorns. It’s probably understood you will do so or just substitute coarse ground black pepper.)

Note- the book claims that rosemary is such a powerful antioxidant it can help stop the formation of carcinogens during grilling and it antioxidant nature can help prevent heart disease and alzheimers
Note on this one rosemary is a very strong flavor so unless you're really into eating a pine tree I wouldn't go above the recomended amount of the spice. That said feel free to play with all of these to suit

I have a little electric grill, which has been put to heavy use lately in order to not heat the house up. I think my most favorite meal made on it, to date, had to have been the one this afternoon. Sliced in half soy dogs, some mushrooms, and fresh young corn on the cob brought over by my cousins from next door. Instead of butter on the cob, I lathered on some virgin olive oil and let it sit in that awhile til the grill was free from the soy dogs. Popped them on....and OMG who the hell needs butter!!!?!!!

YUM OH! And low in fat.

sorry about the 5 pnds. Is it possible that narcotis have some sort of effect on metabolism. I'm stuck, but its all about me not being able to get back on the diet rythem, and not so much about a diet not working..... I haven't been the the gym in a while and that has a big effect. not just in burning the extra calories, but also I seem to stick to my diet when I am working out. Hopefully next week back in.....

That rosemary rub sounds yummy.

And I'm holding at 200. wasn't on the Wii for over a week and that showed. Ugh.

I actually lost 3 pounds this week, which I'm proud of; but I think it's more because I'm working out again; I'm trying to eat better, going the Asian route (seaweed and rice), but I was bad last night at the Asian buffet, naturally. Buffets are the antithesis of dieting...

yay for you.

sadly I cannot have rice and seaweed kinda grosses me out but yes buffets are bad for diets, no doubt

I figure a couple billion skinny Asians can't be too wrong...

I love the roasted seasoned stuff -- it's like eating chips but it's like 1 calorie a chip. And no grease.

hahaha true true

i have no had it that way. It sounds interesting

I've had both sweetish and more salty-- I prefer the savory variety. We have a lot of really good Asian groceries around here so I can experiment, but I couldn't tell you any of the name brands! :D

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
i would probably like it salty because my tastes lie in that direction. sadly the closest asian market is 50 miles away

The La Kama rub sounds particularly yummy to me, because I love cinnamon. The rosemary rub also sounds tasty.

I know it's discouraging, but your weight is the last thing you need to focus on right now. Eat right and do your best. You'll probably start losing again when your arm is better and you can exercise. (hugs)

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
cinnamon is a favorite here too

this is also true but i know it's impairing my healing so it's there in my mind

MM... that sweet and spicy dry rub sounds yummy. I'm going to print that out and put it with the Rosemary Steaks one on the side of my fridginator.

I'm was officially at 142.4 this morning. That's down almost 8 pounds from my starting point, and about halfway to my goal. However, like you, this was not the way I would have chosen to loose weight. Keeping that in mind, I have continued to loose (more gradually) since I have been feeling better, basically by remembering that I do not need to eat when I am not hungry, and also by just eating less. I have a tendency to want eat things just because they sound good whether I'm hungry or not, and also to fill my plate up rather than eating the appropriate amounts.

I was way too ill to ride my bike before, so tomorrow will be my first time out in two weeks. I don't know how far I'll go, but we'll see. I strongly recommend you take yourself up on your offer to walk your building. The halls are bound to be level, and I'd guess it's probably air conditioned even in the halls... or more so than outside, which I know you can't bear when it's warm. (Gods how I would hate that since I cannot bear anything below about 40°, find below 60° unpleasant, and below 75° to be less than optimum for any outdoor activities.)

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
good luck to you

it's way too hot for activity outside right now in fact my building is overpopulated as it was deemed too hot to teach in the two buildings where the a/c has failed but yes i could walk inside the building but right now what spare time I have is dedicated to exercising the shoulder
