Thunder boomed loud enough to rattle windows. Winry opened the back door, yelling to her children to get inside the house before nature let loose her fury. The two eldest loved to splash around and play in the rain, which was fine if there was no lightning. They weren’t quite old enough to understand the dangers.

Her husband did, and Winry knew right where to find him. Once their brood was herded into the play room and settled in to see to its latest destruction, she went into the basement. They had two libraries in the house; the bright and airy one upstairs, and the one she knew Edward would be curled up in now. It was more of a den, filled with all the things Edward liked to read, namely alchemy books. She wasn’t sure why he liked torturing himself with things he would never have again, but she long ago learned to leave it be.

This room had no windows, being completely subterranean, but it did have a lot of lights and a fireplace, though that had no use in this summer storm. Winry didn’t blame Edward for taking refuge here. He did have a lightning rod for a leg. There was nothing anyone could do about automail limbs in that regard, though she had given it some thought.

His ponytail curled over his shoulder as he read. Even after all these years, he was still so adorable. Winry just watched him for a moment until another bone-rattler of thunder got the kids howling her name.

“Need help?” Ed asked.

“I can handle it, but don’t be surprised if you get a lot of company very soon.”

He smiled. “Can’t wait.”

Ed had promised to show her the world. It wasn’t as easy as he had envisioned it. For one, the country had to settle down. For another, Winry had to finish her training. There were a couple bouts of him being stupid mixed into it as well. He had trouble settling down.

Finally, he made good on his promise and took her someplace even he hadn’t been. He took Winry to the sea. Ed hadn’t been prepared for the affect it had on them. The sun had begun to set by the time they checked into their hotel, and Winry didn’t want to wait until morning to see the ocean.

Both of them stood awestruck as the purples and blues of the gloaming touched the deepness of the water. A warm breeze caressed them, bringing the briny scent of the sea with it. Trees like none Ed had ever seen waved in that breeze. He hadn’t expected such noise from the waves. Its rhythm lulled him, easing away some of the tension of travel.

Winry kicked off her shoes, and handed them to him with a wide grin on her face. “Hold these. Isn’t it magnificent? It goes on forever.”

“It does,” Ed agreed, taking her shoes. “What are you doing?”

“What the hotel clerk said, letting the sand get between my toes.” Winry raced down to the water’s edge, laughing.

Ed knew there was probably not going to be any barefoot in the sand for him. Winry would be forever digging the grit out of his leg joints as it was. He envied her joy as she darted about, picking up shells.

“Ed, look. Isn’t it perfect?”

He grinned. He couldn’t remember Winry ever seeming so girlie. He chased after her so he could see the conch shells she held up. “They are.”

Winry slipped her arms around his neck, kissing him. “I’m taking more of the clerk’s advice.”

“Oh?”

“Sleeping with the windows open so we can hear the surf.” Her expression went devilish. “But I have other things in mind. Just listen to that rhythm.”

Ed blushed. He might hurt his back trying to match it, but damn it, it was worth the try. “You always have the best ideas, Winry.”

She kissed him again. “And never forget it.”

Ed knew he never would.
