Still the best name for a con, still tacked onto a tiny con in Athens that fights in a basketball court. Mostly my friends are running it (trying to rope me in but right now I'm quoting my health issues as why not but I will look for vendors for them).

Speaking of health issues, I could hardly move today, I'm so exhausted. I got there an hour later than planned but it worked out. I wanted to enter the raffles and this year...not a lot there that I was interested in anyhow. I didn't win anything this year (last year I won three things so it balances) and one of my friends said, 'watch me win the thing I didn't want but accidentally dropped my ticket into' And she did. She was going to give it to me (a merman illustration) but someone else wanted it more than me so I gave it to him. Karma owes me (and I don't mean the storm it served up, more on that later)

I didn't get to any of the talks because I knew I would never be able to get to them and manage to stay long enough to get to the raffle (in the future I will have to plan my one-day con trips well if I can't get my energy back). I did however get some fun stuff at the vendors.

I picked up A Shade of Winter from Henlo Press a paranormal mystery (some fool forgot her cheaters today. Not mentioning any names....) I've got the first book in several of their series already... which led me to a conclusion (more on that later)

I picked up a couple's earring set of Ozzie and Fizzarolli from Helluva Boss from Unicorn Massacres Designs. It's a cute set. I've bought from them before (artist is trans with a lot of trans rights stuff if you want to take a look).

From Dany Cat Designs I got some soap for me and for gifts. I still have one bar left over from last year. She didn't have any of the dice soap with her this year. I picked up Hades for myself along with Make It So

I said NO more wall art so naturally I bought two postcard sized bits of art from Cocomomo Art because her Hazbin stuff is probably the best I've seen for sale in the past several cons. She also recced a hopepunk queer anime, Promare. I need to find it.

Speaking of wall art, I should have walked past Amanda Scharf Illustration but her water colors were too damn pretty. Did I need a water color of Angel Dust? No. Do I now own one? What do you think? She had so many colors too. If the purple had only been a little richer....I went with dark blue.

There is an artist I get earrings from every con (and other vendors probably hate her) because she sells them for 3$ a pop vs what everyone else does (but I'm also betting she just buys the charms in bulk somewhere) I need to find out if some of my friends wear bigger earrings. Wish [personal profile] evil_little_dog wore earrings because she'd love half of these and sadly the artist doesn't do pins.

I did get some birthday/holiday gifts too. I'll see several of these vendors again in a few weeks at Final Boss con on my university. There was one person selling ITA bags which I need desperately for all my pins but honestly these looked like grocery bags for the same price as much more intricately done backpack styles so I skipped it (and I can make the banners for the pins myself if I take a minute to do it) I was glad I went. Got a few hugs from friends. Yeah I'm not a hugger but on the other hand it's nice to have people who are genuinely happy to see me.

I left the con and went to Kroger for cheese (this one has the fancy cheeses) All was well. I got my cheeses and some absolutely yummy olives that I'm sorry I didn't buy more of. Came out 15 minutes later and it looked cloudy. Five minutes later as I'm getting my Tim Horton's coffee rocket fuel to drive home on, it's even darker. By the time I go 2 miles to Avalanche pizza to pick up my death in a box (otherwise known as the skeletonwitch) it's BLACK. The manager is telling the staff to tell patrons the deliveries will be delayed because of the incoming storm.

I grab my pizza and beat feet. I don't get 5 miles out of town before it let loose. The wind was first, so strong I was literally knocked off the road three times. Then the rain came so hard I thought 'got to stop at the rest stop just up the road and ride this out.' It was raining SO hard I couldn't see the rest stop and missed it. I inched another mile down the highway to the red light where I know there is a gas station. Waited it out there for about 15 minutes. Thankfully my ebook held out because some one forgot to charge it (not mentioning any names) and it was down to 7%.

Luckily after that it was light rain or none all the way home. I'm glad I went. I wish I had energy that 2 hours didn't all but kill me. So that decision I came to at the con...for some damn reason there are a half dozen things I want to do on the 3rd (all in vastly different directions) Ohioana Book festival in Columbus (very late this year), the Gallipolis street steampunk festival, free comic book day, heartwoods mental health festival (in a Chillicothe park), a psychic fair in Logan, the mother's day glass sale in the Hocking Hills.

I decided not to go to the Book festival. My friend isn't going to be there. I haven't read 90% of the books I bought there last year (I'm working on 2 now).I need a new book like I need slapped. Worse, they'll be signed so I won't want to part with them. That doesn't help my space issue. I think I'm better off either doing the steampunk/comic book thing (they're in the same direction) or the glass/mental health fair (also in the same (but different) direction). Decisions Decisions.

Came home and started to watch the newly dropped Gaslight District pilot. Been looking forward to this. I haven't watched more than a few minutes (too tired) and I'm not sure I like the animation style but I'll need to see more.

Mom: I don't want anything for Christmas, just family together
Mom upon seeing some of my festival haul: I see you posted all my birthday/Christmas gifts

Me: thought you didn't want anything.... ha. (she is a sucker for glass and rocks.)

I have almost everything out of the closet now (now to put things in it) SOmething has gone awry. Suddenly the door is hitting my recliner. this recliner hasn't moved so WTF? I do wonder if something has given out in the back (even though it's barely a year old) and it's leaning back. It's a very hard chair to move. I moved it way out so far I can't reach the end table and it was still hitting. Weird.

I got thru one and a half of the file boxes. Some of it I need to keep (like the worker's comp lawsuit stuff. I know it's over with but I need to keep it for my own self for some reason I can't explain. I found the first paperwork they ever gave me at my job in 2004. (that I tossed).

I was going to vote early today. I forgot. Fantastic.

So Adena calls me for the MRI. Can you come tomorrow. Sure? WHen do I have to be in Jackson. Oh, no this is in Chillicothe. Um...excuse me ma'am but the whole point of having ADENA do this is because I won't have to travel. If I want to go to Chillicothe I'd have it done at Ohio Health which is who is working on me. Why would I go to their competitor? Oh....let me see if that's possible (if it's not I'm just going to Ohio Health). Long story short, I'm going to Jackson on Friday. I'll got vote then too.

So Fannish 50. I'll be sharing my geeky haul in a moment but also I wanted to talk cooking shows. I am a fan. I've always been into the recipe type shows. I enjoy cooking and learning new recipes. When I was in the nursing home I got hooked on the competition shows (Now Valerie Bertinelli did herself no favors railing against FoodNetwork when her show was canceled this year but she DOES have a point. There are almost no recipe shows any more and it's all challenges).

I have been slowly taking the challenges off my fannish watch list. Chopped is too weird, there's little to be gained from watching it. I still like Guy's Grocery Games because they usually use normal ingredients and I've learned tips. I do watch the baking challenges, god knows why because I don't bake but they're fun. But like Beat Bobby Flay, they feel SO contrived and it's only getting worse (I mean on Bobby he's standing right there making faces. You'd need to never look at him to not know which dish is his). This year's Halloween one seems like the fix is in since day one.

Aaron is an adorable young man. I've seen him in two other baking challenges already (the elf on the shelf Christmas one and I swear he was in the Spring baking challenge too) It feels like they very much want him to win regardless. I'm not saying he's not good (and obviously I can't taste it) but there has been at least twice when the decorating he's shown (like this week's dog demon) has not held a candle to some of the others. Ditto his Franken-pig...honestly I thought it was an elephant and watching these three judges gush over it seems unbelievable. If he doesn't win next week I'd be shocked.

come look at all my new magic beans. I think I have good taste in geeky junk! )

I'd take pictures but I'm horrified at what came out of that closet. I pulled out an old rollerback carryon bag that I knew was in bad shape but was using as storage....of paperwork from 2004-2005. Holy hell. I'd forgot my bank was originally something else. There are credit cards and former 401Ks SO much paperwork to burn. So much bullshit paper to haul to the recycler tomorrow (though I suspect it'll end up in a landfill I don't trust these multi-recycler bins). I even found the original things wrong with this apt walkthru from 2005...

I don't always get calls on my cel but I did tonight about my oncology visit (just confirming it for later this week) and found on last Thursday they DID get my MRI approved but yeah Adena didn't bother to call me. I'll have to deal with that tomorrow.

So let me tell you about the renn fest. I got to the exit off 71S (which is a major n/s interstate with heavy traffic) and had to pull onto the side of the road because at 1045 (for an event that opens at 1030) the traffic was backed up that much. 45 minutes to get to the site and my heart sinks. 'sold out ticket holders only.' But before that I see (since I'm now doing this every other year) that one of the farms about a mile from the renn site has been converted to a housing development that has houses in the 500K + range. That blows me away, keeping in mind this is 1030 on a sunday by noon it'll take you 1-2 hours to go those few miles and now there's this housing plan...Now I wonder what happens to the renn fest once these wealthy people get fed up of 8 weeks of this nonsense.

Anyhow so I go to the gate because I have this half price entry thing from the library and there is literally just ONE ticket booth because now they are limiting tickets (which frankly they have to) so in the future no more going without a prebought ticket online. But at least I didn't drive 100 miles for nothing.

I go for the shopping, I'm not going to lie. I did see Dirk and Guido Swordsmen did not retire after all so I watched some of their show. The fest had grown even since 2022. There is so much to see that even after 4 hours I didn't go into every shop and only saw part of Dirk's show and a small part of an escape artist's show. Granted I didn't need to be in every shop. I did find one that had cool stuff...that I don't think should be there. Previously (until the expansion) it HAD to be handmade. Now most are but several aren't. This wasn't. It had cool glitter lava lamp kinda halloween/christmas decorations. if this was in the Yule village (new this year) I wouldn't mind but I really want this to be for artists. (i didn't buy anything there but there was temptation)

I got some outstanding jewelry which...was the only thing priced appropriately. Maybe because they can sell so much. in 2019 one of the vendors told me it was 1000/for a tent (let alone the actual structures). I'm not sure if that's all 8 weeks or per week but regardless that means vendors have so much upcharge it's insane. I'm like oo a wooden mug, dad would like it. 39.50....no 395. For a mug. Keep that please. cloaks for 550$. Dudes, even I can sew this. Yes you probably have 100$ in fabric and your time but...so the clothing was so over priced I could buy two-three simple steampunk gowns handmade off etsy (or one fancy one) for what they wanted. I think they're going to price it to the point no one wants to do this any more. Maybe they're getting those prices. (not from me but we all overspend in these places)

I did see something I want to try with an upcoming hat, using upholstery fabric around the hat band. That was cool and I should be able to do that.

I did well walking but getting back to the car I started to feel my age (i.e. 4 hours in the heat non-stop walking/standing was getting much) but when I got out of the car at the truck stop to pee (hey they FINALLY have actual toilets at the fest) my body said WTF did you do??

ALL the fall festival photos under here. I'll share my haul tomorrow )

let's continue with the Music Monday Alphabet theme with sharing songs that begin with a certain letter. Feel free to chime in with your favorite song(s) that follow the weekly letter. Hit me with your favs. I love hearing new music or revisiting older pieces. This week's letter is Y

oh there are plenty of Y )

So this was the final day of my 3 festivals in 3 days (my knee is now suing for divorce) It was the Bob Evans Farm Festival. For those who don't know my university now owns Bob Evans farm (the actual farm, not the restaurant chain, we should be so lucky) This festival is a huge deal but on the other hand it doesn't change much from year to year. I go in, overpay for things I can get anywhere and maybe buy some crafts. So yes, I have maple sugar cotton candy (I'm not taking notes on this. I get it once a year and I'm well aware it's bad for me), my local honey that'll last me 2 months and pulled my arm out of its socket lugging it around the fest.

I got some jerky and lunch was 10 mini donuts (see above note) some aphrocheesiac cheese and another piece of glass for mom. I saw a cool lamp made of an antique meatgrinder and a colander and thought I can do this. I got some of my favorite coffee and an apple cider slushie (that was 90% iced cider and not a slushie) I got into an argument with the bean men. They cook ham/bean soup in iron cauldrons over fire. It's yummy. They would NOT hold my beans (which they usually do) because it was after 12. I'm like you're here to 5 pm what the hell does it matter? Keep the beans. I am NOT lugging a gallon of fucking beans thru this fest and my car is parked in timbuktu. I don't need the gas that bad.

One of the new things I found was delicious jam (blueberry cardamon) but I wasn't into spending 10$ on a small jar of jam that a) i could make b) can't technically eat. But it was very good and they had Highland cattle which was new. Also new alfalfa pellets so we could feed the longhorn cattle. They have soft tongues and just like a dog, you can be there with a handful of treats and all they want is the one you dropped and it bounced somewhere they can't find. Also got poked in the shoulder by said longhorn (not hard but man these boys could do some damage)

So what does this have to do with my writerly ways? Not much but in these three festivals I've seen a lot of t-shirts and what not and thought, you know this is one way to help define a character. I used it in
These Haunted Hills as a running joke really but it very much helped to show Josh's personality and his interests (I've done this in other stories and lots of fanfic) I just think it's a fun way to do some characterization. For Josh he wore a red shirt reading Expendable, one that had a surly Batman holding a cup of coffee and the saying “Not a morning person.” a T-shirt with a dragon sitting on a hoard of books with the words “book wyrm” on it and his T-shirt that read In My Defense I Was Left Unsupervised. Does that help you get an idea of what Josh is like?

As for me yesterday I had a shirt saying I'm Not Yelling I'm Italian (which went over well) and today's was I myself am Strange and Unusual (and if you got the movie reference you're my people). People could tell things about me.

On the flip side you can see negatives in this too, like the lady in the restaurant parking lot with the t-shirt reading the sun is high and so am I or the guy in the pick up truck at Wal-Mart yesterday with a bumper sticker reading four doors means room for more whores. Whether or not my instant assessment of these people was accurate I assure you it was made based on that.

I've had editors who really liked this technique and one who hated it (but I think he hated me or genre fic or something but he was the only editor I ever complained to the publisher about because he called this stupid and he wanted major revisions (which this was a third edit which is only usually line edit stuff not a full on rewrite) and some of it was straight out personal attacks (I did get an apology from the head editor)

This went better than I expected if I'm honest because Columbus is a NIGHTMARE to drive in and they are doing a SEVEN year road re-routing around downtown (including cutting off the beltway as I found out today but at least that wasn't difficult) However the usually mostly empty US-35 between me and Chillicothe and US 23 between Chillicothe and Columbus was a) packed b) pretty sure everyone was drunk by 1130 AM. Holy fuck.

But getting to the parking garage (mostly empty) was easy and they had plenty of school buses shuttling us to St. John the Baptist Catholic church (more on that later) where the festival is held around the surrounding streets. I'll be honest it's sort of what I expected except for less vendors. It was mostly food and some midway games (i.e. it's a street fair) This year was a celebration of Abruzzo which is where my family is from. And when I got home I saw I should have looked at the flyer they gave more closely as it explained some of the vendors and about the culture there.

I got a yummy pepperoni roll (and later some italian ice because it's a thing with me) and 20$ in over priced cookies 98% I could make myself if not so lazy (the only one worth the price was the sfogliotelle which are hard to make) They were yummy too so I don't regret them.

Most of the vendors they did have were selling things like solar panel generators (I did not win one), some junk, one with murano glass (which told me why Homegoods is selling it cheap. China bought out the naming rights) She had pictures of the Italian artists creating her stuff (in theory) and I got green glass hearts for mom and blue glass (with adventurine in it) earrings for me. They had that ceramic kitchenware (Italian themed of course) you see everywhere (at 3 times the price).

I spoke to the ladies of the Chicchi club, an Italian women's club but at 150$/year it's more than I want to pay. There were spinning wheels you can win stuff one (the one with pictures of Saints for kids was...disturbing) There was a chuck-a-luck wheel and suddenly it's 1985 when those used to be at every fair.

So the church. I used to go to this when I lived in Columbus. It was (maybe still is as there was an Italian to English prayer sheet) Italian Language and the entire church inside was ringed at the ceiling by those nearly life sized saint statues that Catholics so love (but when you have so many of them it throws your right into the Uncanny Valley as is eerie AF) The steps up have the names of famous Italians (I couldn't get a pic) It's a gothic church and after I climbed those steps (If there is a handicapped access I have no idea where it would be) I saw major changes were made. The statues are gone (You can see the platforms for them up near the ceiling vault in my pics). There are still some up at the altars but that's not a surprise.

But I was an hour too early for the church history tour and I thought okay that could be interesting. Back down the steps, go watch bocce, drink mochas sweat like I'm dying because I wore jeans. It was only supposed to be 65. It was 83. The church history was less exciting than I hoped and half of it was an explanation of what is Catholicism (transubstantiation, the stations of the cross etc) and I didn't want to leave because a) a seat even if it's wood (no being comfy in a Catholic church) b) I was over the a/c vent. It was only 35 minutes long (swore it was an hour at least) but the biggest change was the huge St. John the Baptist stained glass window (put in the year I left Columbus)

It was fun but there was more to do at night (it goes to midnight) so if I go back, it would be me staying overnight somewhere and giving it a try at night. Also it's not something I need to do every year.

Took my books to halfprice bookstore. Remembered why I stopped doing this (20 books = 4$) just donate them to the library Dana. Hit up Trader Joe's, hit up Tim Hortons on the way home (this one closed earlier than mine, they weren't happy and neither was I with that sugar free burnt- assed nastiness but at least it was caffeine.

Have some pictures Church pic )

Saw a woman in the church was interesting. She had an Australian style 'walkabout hat' with a braided leather band covered with enamel pins but not fandom pins. They were saint pins (they were on her purse too) which I had no idea existed (but now I have ideas for my fandom ones) She had a shirt with Mary on it stepping on a snake reading I tread on thee (I'm assuming a riff on the don't tread one me flag) and Mary is often depicted stepping on a snake (the one in the picture here isn't but the one from the church I grew up in had it) This is a person who might make it into a story
cornerofmadness: (angeldust2)
and yet it was disappointing AF at the same time.

Last night was rough as it was. I think I figured out why my stomach has been so nauseated/GERD issuey. Yesterday I had an after dinner caramel apple latte from tim Horton's (very good). cut for gross ) so basically 9 hours later my stomach hadn't even digested liquid. Sigh. I really do need to make that appointment.

So since I slept badly (and breathed stomach acid into my lungs) I got a late start to the Cryptid steampunk event at the meadery/winery Dutch Creek. I thought it was in Nelsonville which is a bit further. It was in Athens, actually just a couple miles from Stroud's Run (which is in my novel!) My steampunk group has been doing stuff with them. I've met the owners at Queen City Steam.

And I get there (an hour away) and there is nothing much. Four vendors, all of whom I know from various steampunk events. And I rather feel bad for them. One guy was from nearly 400 miles away (I ended up buying some costume piece from here.) though why no one vetted this better I'm not sure. I know they were trying to make it a thing. They really wanted it to be good. THe only other people there were three couples who had NO idea this was happening and were confused and one other steampunk person. The sweet steam chocolate people were there (hey you, she remembered me) and the lady I bought the mushroom necklace from in Loveland this past March (have I mention I got into mushrooms and goblincore heavy this year?) She had a duck.

No, really.

Treasure the duck. I pet her. She nibbled me. I didn't buy anything but I got a rubber duck from the vintners because they had all these duck based games (with duck prizes) It's a cute pink/white pegasus duck. I didn't play the games though (they were down a hill and my cane was in the car and I had no intention of staying until the games were over.)

In many ways I felt bad for the organizers too because they probably lost money on this because they had Steampunk Xena showing up, she's a fire dancer. I'm not sure if others would come later but the costume contest and Xena weren't until after dark and I was long gone with a bottle of cherry mead. (after learning I didn't like the blackberry one much.)

On the short drive into Athens it occurs to me...you didn't just have the glass of blackberry mead. You had a flight before that testing them out (hint bourbon mead wine was just wrong). You basically drank 3/4s a bottle of wine. Are you okay to drive? (I have no idea because it takes way more than that to make me buzzed) So I got to Kroger's just to wait it out.

The 25$ of cheese, equal dollars of international cookies from Marshalls and the marble skull serving plate suggest that yes it was a good idea to be off the road. I got take out from my favorite Chinese place (which had been slipping) and when I got home it leaked ALL over my dress, carpet, computer kitchen as I ran it in (also it wasn't good I need to find a new place).

I had a little fun but yeah it wasn't worth the 2 hours on the road round trip (oddly I haven't been going to Athens much any more) I was SO glad I didn't wear my good expensive dress because I'd have lost it about the general's tso sauce. At least the skirt it did get on was dark blue and you won't be able to see a stain.

I forgot to do [community profile] thefridayfive but I wanted to so here they are

1. What are your 5 favorite flowers? Roses, lilacs, lilies, irises and peonies

2. What do you like to do with flowers? I generally don't do much with them. Occasionally I'll cut them and bring them inside. I do cook/drink a lot with flowers. That might be my biggest use of them other than growing them just to look at.

3. Do you like native flowers, domestic flowers, or a mix of both? A mix but I'm more about the native flowers or at the very least not planting things that can go invasive exotic all over the place. Me along with my university (especially when I was in FL) fought with Lowes/Walmart etc about bringing in exotic plants which yes were pretty but were dangerous.

4. Do you grow flowers yourself, or just look at what grows elsewhere? I grow more than I have space for. My garden is stupid crowded and much of the university's greenhouse is all my crap and then I put more at my parents because there was just not enough room here.

5. Do you know (any version of) the Language of Flowers? I do and I have used it in stories.
cornerofmadness: (plotbunny)
Otherwise known as the writerly ways edition. So I did as I said I would, got up early and arrived at Point Pleasant for the Mothman Festival. It was cool and FOGGY. I could barely see the memorial silver bridge and while there was no traffic, the tiny public lot (reserved for the handicapped) had 2 places left at twenty after nine (it opens at 10). I took one. At least I could have parked close at the 20$ a car lots if not for that.

This was a good idea. It was still relative cool half the time I was there (close to 90 when I left at 12:30) The crowds weren't too bad but the coffee shop had people out the door. Hard Pass. I remembered last year there were food trucks and coffee in this small green space (where a building used to be) and bingo. Coffee no line. While there I checked out the vendors and one turned out to be one of my former students now an occupational therapist who does yoga in Gallipolis. We talked a while, I'll take her name to the wellness committee to come help with the faculty and tell the dean of students (because she was really hoping to work with students) about her. so that was nice.

On that end of town were the Imperial Storm troopers and Boba fetts raising money for suicide prevention (here's some cash) and I got into one of the stores I had spotted last time I was in town but the rain stopped me. It's barely bigger than my living room with t-shirts and tumblers and I don't see much of a future for it. Oh well.

The line to the get your mothman selfie was long. To get into the mothman museum even longer (hard pass on both since I'm local. I can go any time) I did sneak around back because there was SO much money stuffed into the shiny hiney I had to get a pic (hope it came out because now the sun's boiling and my screen is barely visible)

Many of the usual suspects were there vendor wise. New to the scene was the guy from
Expedition Bigfoot Yes I got his books (shame, Dana shame) I actually only bought 1 other book from Dave Sprinks. I passed on Weird Willis's work but only because I called over the giant line, James, you gonna be in Jackson Library next month? Yes, cool, buy from you then. (he's another paranormal investigator that I've gotten to know over the years) I even ran into the guys I bought the stuffed Nessie from at the Kecksburg UFO festival.

I could have bought so much more but I behaved myself. I got cheapo sasquatch earrings and got holidays gifts. I found hazbin art of all things and I spoke to the Ghostbusters (making up the direct opposite end of the festival from the stormtroopers) raising money for heart disease studies. Sadly the ladies said their base is a firehall in Charleston WV (a little far to go for meetings for me) but we got to talking about Husk and Hazbin Hotel (one of them hadn't seen it yet, me and her friend were enablers) I mentioned I'd be in Charleston soon for Tsubasacon and they're event runners for it. She was excited I might wear my steampunk (as the theme is cyberpunk vs steampunk) and even more so if I come as Edalyn in her PJs like I did last year.

As I told mom sadly I'm not even 100% sure I can go because of the angiogram and in talking to mom I realized oh...I can wear my expensive steampunk daydress but NOT the corset. That backpressure could pop the clot from the angiogram.

Anyhow after my wallet wept big fat tears and I'd been there for 3 hours and it was getting hot/crowded I left. I would do this again next year same bat time same bat channel because it worked for me. The only downside is a) some stuff was sold out but who cares really? It's not like I NEED this stuff b) all the talks are in the afternoon and sure I could have hung in there for another half hour but eh, I've heard most of this before and I'll probably hear it again at the Loveland Frogman Fest next year.

But by this time I was hot and I had to PEE because I refused to pee in a gross portapotty on the sidewalk. I drove up the university to pee and to go look at the links I forgot to do yesterday (and snitch some gloves so I could work on the tv stand (more on that tomorrow)

So let me get to the writerly ways. I personally find these festival artistically stimulating so who is YOUR favorite cryptid? Who could you see writing into a story? Who have you already done? There is one romance series there about the mothman. I read book one and it was very obviously written by someone who hadn't been to Point Pleasant...or even Google Earthed it. I didn't bother with second two but that was in my head thinking up this question.

And in writing news I just finished my penultimate chapter of my [community profile] wipbigbang by the time I get the last chapter done and all the editing it'll be 90K. I am crying.

Today's festival is the world's worst advertised festival. For context, the nearby town of Gallipolis (across from Point Pleasant WV) on the Ohio river was big in the Underground Railroad and has been celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation for over 100 years. About three years ago my university started taking part.

I only know this because I got a solitary email about it. I heard nothing on the radio/tv/saw flyers anywhere. It's rather embarrassing IMO. They had a senator (WoC) from WV talking when I got there ...to like 10 people. Geez. Now as I was going in a sea of school buses were leaving so was there a parade with marching bands? I'm guessing yes. There were even less vendors this year than last (no lie like 8)

But my only reason to be there was I knew the people from the John Gee historical center would be there. they had told me two years ago about two Black sisters who were chiropodists in Gallipolis from 1905-1957 and my own branch of medicine grew out of that so I want to include them in my study. They had a tiny thing on them with an article saying they went to the Reed School of Chiropody but it doesn't say where. They warned me there was very little on them. Boy were they right.

I went right over to my office and found...nothing. I have no idea where this school was because it wasn't coming up on bing or my pro level search engines. I did find a tiny bit out about the sisters Jeanette and Mayme Emerson because even though Bossard Library in Gallipolis is a small town library it has big city ambitions. EVERY newspaper from the the late 1800s on has been digitized. A thing I learned today is they didn't need social media back then. The newspaper did it for them. Throwing a party? It's in the paper. Coming back from vacation? It's in the paper....wow. I now have to find out what the heck the Social Twelve were because Mayme was big into it (I'm assuming it was a woman's club) I can at least get a picture of the sisters from the newspapers and I can drive my butt to their home which is still there and their graves are in the segregated black cemetery on Pine St.

And since I have NO idea where in time and space i am this week (just told my brother happy belated anniversary and he's like it's tomorrow dummy) I forgot my friday fandom so let me do that now.

I did write a story this week (and I'm almost done with the penultimate chapter of my monster [community profile] wipbigbang

Today was the Jack Pine Studio Glass Pumpkin Festival His glass studio is a big draw in the Hocking Hills. I've never been to it. I had looked at Google Maps before I left (because I'm old apparently) My GPS was obviously not taking me Google's way. I know what it's doing, going the LONG way which is faster in some ways because it's highway.

I go off Vigo road...and it immediately becomes a different road not on Google. I go a few miles and no signs of 327N which was supposed to be right there (If I go on that south it'll take me back home) . I give up, turn around, go the long way. I get to OH-180 and GPS says you have arrived.

No, dear I'm in some Trump worship back country hellscape but I AM on OH-180 so I just watch mail boxes for the numbers so I know where to go (I did several years of home health, I'm a map reader, know the tricks) OH loves having a road go one way then take a 90 degree angle...multiple times but I get there. I peek into the 1001 degree studio and nope out of that (I've seen glass making many times. It's one of the things I would have liked to learn to do but between bad shoulders and asthma I don't think it's meant to be)

So these glass pumpkins are gorgeous. I do mean gorgeous, some are even flattish on one side like real ones. the little ones start at 65, the medium at 100, I didn't even check the big ones. They have the hand-carry grocery store baskets. I'm surrounded by people (in the dozens) with 4-8 pumpkins each. I mean yeah I got a 5$ coupon for prearranging my parking but my god. I mentioned I was surprised at how many people were buying to the lady next to me. Well they ARE collectibles and he only does it once a year.

Yeah, okay but are they really?!? There is at least 50 left from last year and this year's pumpkin of the year has at least 100 and more coming out all the time (this is just day one) . I decide, okay I'll buy one for mom. Let's pick up one I'll like down the road. I found one that was somehow 25$ less than all the others. It's my favorite color (purple) and in the basket it went. Suddenly I got pulled to this black one with blue glittery drips. It's also on sale....100$ later some dumbass has 2 overpriced hand blown art glass.

I liked the other vendors and did get mom a tiny octopus (blue glass). And that's it. I bypassed all the jewelry. I'm rather proud of myself for that. There was one thing I nearly bought. This woman was hand painting canvases and turning them into clocks. It was halloween themed with ghosts/bats being the numbers. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like unprotected canvas would just get dusty and very hard to clean (and it was nearly as much as the two pumpkins together) I gave it a pass.

My best buys were food. Schmidt's (from Schmidt's Sausage Haus in German Village in Columbus, a staple since the 1880s) had a food truck. Gimme your giant hot dog smothered in kraut and fried onions AND OMG is that a black raspberry cream puff?!?! Yes please. And then there was a boba tea place that Americanized it. I had the Lake Logan, strawberry lemonade/cotton candy tea/kiwi bobas. SOOOOOOO sweet, so good, so tired (my sugar is probably off the scales)

On the way back (since my GPS knows my address exists) it took me back the way Google Maps had it and if I hadn't turned around I would have found 327...eventually)

Before I left for the festival, I was talking to my parents and I could hear my dad laughing at me. Everyone knows I hate heat. If you don't know it, the Weather Channel lets you check weather in like a half dozen zip codes. MY area was hotter than FL, GA and even Las Vegas. It was 90+

Day 1 so after PT I went to the Apple Festival. For once I actually was having the back pain I was supposed to be there for. This is what happens, this is WHY I need the MRI on my back. It happens like this. Something pressed on the nerves. I can do bridges all day in PT. They've been mixing it up to make it harder. Today I couldn't lift my hips off the table and they were stunned. I'm like at least you're seeing this. It's NOT all in my head.

So from there I went to the library to see the quilt show because I love that. They had two like I want to do, ones made of T-shirts. I liked how they came out. I really need to try this some day.

I found a good parking place to get to the vendor hall in the memorial building and it was...just not as good as in the past. Don't get me wrong, it was packed with vendors but nothing I was much interested in. Even the jewelers I got that bracelet from 2 weeks ago had very little (I think they've been picked over in the last two festivals). I got some pickles from one and the guy who was carving with a chainsaw had a small christmas tree under 20$ so now it's mine.

I also went to the midway portion, got me some Italian ice (because I can't say no to it) and some rosettes and went into the Apple festival art show at the Markay theater. It was underwhelming but there were a few pieces I really liked. After that I went home. It's really not much of a festival but it's in the closest thing I have to a hometown these days so...

And oh, something for fannish 50. I have many many mystery/police procedural shows. I've never been motivated to join their fandoms outside of Prodigal Son which ate me whole. But that's been canceled three years now.

But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm excited one of my current favorites (not one I write for) is back. Van der Valk, an Ámsterdam set police procedural (but very British in casting). honestly the titular character you want to punch most days but it's a good series.

ETA - one of my credit cards made me go full on Let Me Speak To Your Manager Karen... So one of my cards got hacked last year and they never replaced it. Then the cancer came and I forgot about it until I got a letter 2 weeks ago saying if I don't use the card they'll close the account and I'll lose all my points. I called them on the 10th and asked for a new card after getting assurances I would NOT lose my points.

I got the new card today. Went to activate it only to get 'you can't activate this card, the account is closed.' Are you fucking kidding me? 'Do you want to talk to a representative.' Damn right I do. I explain the situation. He goes I'll check. Comes back and says nope sorry your account is closed.

So I asked, why then would you even SEND the card less than 2 weeks after speaking to me if the account was closed and my 20 years of points are gone?!?

I'll check on that. Comes back, nope sorry can't help you.

Manager, now.

She fixed it in two minutes and in theory i can use the card in 2 days. We shall see.

So I'm clearing out the part of the room where I'll have the TV stand put (right now it's on a rickety stand held up by two big bins of books. Rocket is NOT impressed by this and does not know how to handle it so he's opted for wandering and howling. So helpful.

I looked through the books. There are things I've had in there since the 80s and never read. I never will. So 5 bags of books are going for donations.

Speaking of donations I forgot this part yesterday. So my friends gave me some donation suggestions for my clothes one of them was My Brother's Keeper (a Baptist charity) in Wellston and since it was dead center of the festival I went inside. Keep in mind I'm coming from PT so I'm in a t-shirt and those knit type shorts that I don't usually wear out but they're the best for PT. I ask the lady are they taking donations

Lady: yes we are

Me: okay what are your hours since I don't want to walk them thru the festival

Lady: (obviously relieved) oh thank you. We've been SO busy today. Our hours are on the door.

She looks at me and then says are you from McArthur?

Me: no I'm from this area (McArthur is about 15-20 miles north)

Lady: Do you know the St Francis outreach there?

Me: No but I'm sure I could find it.

Lady: You could do that. I'm sure they'd want your clothes.

Me: (puzzled) okay sure. Alright then I'm going back to the festival. thanks

Lady: come back and shop sometime.

I leave wondering WHY did the Baptists just send me 20 miles away to the Catholics knowing I'm from here? Is it my clothing and she thinks I'm too poor to have clothes worth their time? Is it the Welsh dragon on my shirt and she thinks it's demonic? Did she see the Victor and the Bully Sinner pin on my purse? Do I send out former Catholic vibes?!?

Guess I'll be calling the Catholics (or just drive around until I find an anonymous bin which is my preference)

Found a fun channel on YT Pasta Grannies. They are recipes but they are also the history/culture/language of the regions and these women. And also the handmade dough makes me feel 6 again making it with my grandma

On FB I saw that Point Pleasant WV (yes Mothman country) was having a Tribute to the River festival with sternwheelers and some things going on otherwise. I decided why not because I do like sternwheelers and I won't go to the Marietta sternwheeler fest because of the sheer number of people in a small town. And I wanted to see the new murals on their floodwall (which was inspired by other nearby towns like Portsmouth)

So I get there and it's nearly 90 but I'm ahead of the storm I know is coming. The flood wall murals were down right amazing. As you walk through the gate to the ampitheater where I should have braved the heat, there's a colonist on one side and chief Cornstalk of the Shawnee on the other and that is just how they did the mural. One whole side was given over to the Shawnee people (and didn't shy away from the murder of Cornstalk). The other side was all the revolutionary war stuff (I want to know what Scottish earl Dunbarr had to do with this) The whole thing is 150 feet long (there are some blank walls still, not sure why)

The sternwheelers were cool. I had seen a few of these in Marietta two years ago. I really loved the Pearl Anne until I saw the Trump poster in the window...I did wish there had been anyone on the dock to talk to. I saw no one. It was a ghost town so that was a bit disappointing.

Also I could find NONE of the other stuff that was meant to be going on there. I wasn't too put out by that as it was meant to be geared to kids. Instead I went into the new Mothman trading company, a story that houses the black light mothman mini golf (gotta do that) and it's FILLED with cryptid related everything (guess where I'm doing my holiday shopping) I also went to the Mason Jar, the local antique shop. I bought a 'wine cooler' in heavy ceramic with cucina italiana on it. I doubt it's old but it was six bucks and I can put utensils in it.

I was going to go to the flawed frog (another new store in the area) I have NO idea what it is and has no online presence but the clouds had arrived so I went into the coffee grinder to get a mocha to go...but they're slow (the teen goth girl loved my Huskerdust stuff on my purse) the storm arrived. I was stuck there. It was also raining inside the coffee house. uh-oh. Spoke to tourists trying to help them find a) things to do b) places to eat. The rain is much needed but came in so very hard that by the time it slowed enough to race to the car, it was over my shoes in the street (in fact the streets were so flooded it made me rethink even considering moving there)

The storms came off and on all day but again we need the rain. Knocked my power out too but at least NOT during the online Abney Park concert showcasing their new album/novel combo. However they had issues on their end thanks to the heat. They had to turn off their a/c and some of the lights for the show because of the breaker. Yikes. It was a good concert though.

Mom and I went to my aunt's place to help with the funeral arrangements. I ended up taking over (by request) the selection of hymns and readings. I knew two. I have never seen these hymns. Weird. It also looks like I'll have to give one of the readings.

Today they also declined my MRI again in spite of the insurance saying a bad nerve conduction test would count. I hate medical mutual.

Let me tell you a little bit about the gem festival. It's technically gem and craft show at the local greenhouse/farmers' market. They had a ton of vendors. I did find a few things at the craft vendors as gifts. As for the gems, Mom got a really cool carved bird, a serpetina heart and a few others smaller stones. I got a bunch of small stones (also for gifts) and then I got a pendant. (which now I suppose will remind me of my uncle's passing) It's moonstone, amber, pearl and smoky quartz

Kecksburg

In 1965 a UFO theoretically went down in Kecksburg PA. Today I went to the Kecksburg UFO festival. This is about 50 miles from the parentals home and mom went with me.

She is expecting 20 people. I'm expecting hundreds (It was closer to a thousand). It has been beautiful the last two days. Today was 90+ again. I honestly thought they said there would be talks. If there were, it wasn't announced in anyway. So basically it was a packed arts and crafts show. Also the parking was poorly marked. they had ONE parking lot marked and it was filled. I was cranked off after driving that far so I went exploring turned out there was one before it (unmarked and a bit far) and one right across from it, large and had room (we got there when it started mind you)

So everything was UFO and cryptid themed for the most part. I liked the vendors a lot. There were things I wanted to get but restrained myself. I do regret forgetting to go back for the alien head wine stopper with glow in the dark eyes. (because classy). There was so much stuff to see. The other thing I regret passing on was the aprons with To Serve Men (from Twilight Zone) and the one with an alien chasing a John Deere saying eat locally. I saw a few paranormal investigators I know.

I did buy a Nessie plushie and UFOs abducting a cow earrings. Mom got some alien jerky. Ha. One of the favorite things I saw, the dude in the parking lot with the a pull along coffin. Also I did get a picture of the famous acorn statue (it's what the UFO was meant to look like)

The GPS didn't want to get us home. It wanted to go down a closed road. I wish you could tell them that so they'd pick a new route. Had to stop for directions.

Lilyfest

Jul. 13th, 2024 10:31 pm
cornerofmadness: (Default)
Because I can't talk about what happened in PA today because they are thoughts I hate even thinking and don't want to put into print.

As promised here is my Lilyfest write up. So my GPS took me the long way there. It's not close FYI it's 40+ miles in the Hocking Hills and there was one gas station on US93 that I thought didn't I used to turn there? But it's been nearly 10 years since I've been to this fest (which feels unreal but I quit working summers with my last shoulder surgery and I think that was like 2014 or something) Maybe that's how I get to my friend's cabin in the woods. Regardless it's a good thing to go the long way because it takes me right past Old Man's Cave. There's a lodge there and I'm like last time at Lilyfest there were 3 portapotties. I stop at the cave park to pee.

And it is PACKED. There are 3 parking lots of considerable size and almost all are filled. Holy Shit. It's like 1230 on Friday and it's 98 fucking degrees out (about 10 degrees cooler in the woods) WHY are 500 fools in the woods? (This is why I don't go to that cave until late fall. It's gorgeous and too popular).

I go another 10 miles up the tiny-assed road to the fest. It is very much unchanged in the last decade. The same 3 portapotties, the same two stages with um...less talented local bands (they aren't awful but this is likely the pinnacle of their careers), the plants (only one vendor) and some of the very same artists. Also some artists who are seriously delusional in their pricing.

Right off the bat I found 2 artists I knew I'd come back to, one doing pendants of semi-precious stones with wire wrapping (10-80$ depending on size and stones) and someone doing glass paperweight (of which I get mom one a year because she loves glass and I'm gonna own 50 of the damn things when she passes). Later I find like 3 other stone/wire wrappers and seriously delusional with 150-250$ on the wraps. That better be gold. I have friends who do this. I know the value of their time and the stones and the first lady is much more in the ballpark. there was someone with neat ceramic plates with wooded night scenes but she had the shapes a little off kilter (like they squashed during firing) and prices in the triple digits. For an off kilter octagon plate I can get 3 muffins on? Nope.

Maybe the cost of vending there has greatly increased. Supplies surely have but some of them were pricing themselves out of most people's budgets. I saw a glass worker who did mosiacs. Her stuff was affordable but...the same pictures I saw a decade ago because I spotted the one I bought for evil little dog way back when. I didn't buy anything more there.

The ubiquitous mix-your-snack-dip dudes were there and since they gave me so many tester pretzels I felt like an oink so I caved and bought the 3 for 15$ (cinnabun, roasted garlic asiago, strawberry and weirdly the savory is half the size of the sweet).

And after nearly melting I spotted a new vendor: someone taking vintage post office box plates and making small storage boxes/piggy banks out of them. For the young folk, back in the day your p.o. box had a combination lock on it. They were often pretty. The Chippy Beaver had them from 1900-1970. I didn't want the latter as they were the things of my childhood and not quite as ornate. I was eyeing the art deco 1920s ones. Now type of wood made the price vary (which yes understandable because there is a big variation in price) Was this more than I wanted to pay? Yes. Did I walk away? Yes. Did I walk back and buy one? Yes. 1920s in hickory. I love it dearly.

After just over an hour I had been thru it all and it was too damn hot to stay longer so I went back to the two vendors from the start of this and got mom a paperweight (downright cheap) and confused him when I said I'd put his deets on social media (dude I get you're a boomer but seriously is it so confusing that I'm trying to help??) I stopped at the wire wrap lady with the reasonable prices and dicked around forever (literally had to dry my hands on my pants twice because I was too sweaty to be comfortable touching anything) I finally settled on a fossil rock and hobbled out of the woods (stopped by a lady about 15-20 years older than me going wish I had brought MY cane. Really? Did you not know there is nothing but bare dirt/gravel paths?)

I also bought mom a Little Judy lily (her name is Judy) and the bare roots of a prairie blue lily. I got some super pink bare roots for me. Let's see if I can plant it tomorrow.

Going home it started me back the way I came and then on US 56 it decided let's go this way (I did stop back Old Man's Cave again to pee and grabbed a gatorade out of the vending machine because I was dying) this way was NOT right. After two turns I was sure of it. I'm like Creole-hue road?!? I KNOW my friend's cabin is out that way. That's not the way home. Then it goes turn left on Stein. Stein is two ruts with some gravel and grass in the middle. Oh fuck no, you possessed GPS. I turn around back to 56 and literally 2 miles later I'm on 93 which is the road all the way home. Um WTF?

Last night/this morning I was having a weird dream. I can't remember all of it but I was in this old house with my mother and her sister's two daughters (my cousins are older than me). Something was in the walls. Like a haunted something. It was trying to drag my mother into the walls. I was stopping it with my psychic abilities but my two cousins were oh no you can't do that? You need Jesus. So I grabbed my holy water from St Winifried's well in Wales and started splashing it into the hole in the wall and said YOU two pray. You're better at it than me and went back to using my powers. The holy water turned into a gel for some reason but I got the thing beaten back and kept mom out of the wall. My brain is weird.

Have pictures of the Bishop Educational Gardens for Lilyfest and my magic beans )

So today was the Ohioana Book Festival and I got a late start. Otherwise it was a great day. Sure I had to participate in the Hunger Games to find a parking spot and the library's parking garage is underground and I was so deep Morlocks nearly got me on the way to the elevator.

Still I am SO GLAD they moved this fest to the library vs the downtown hotel it used to be at where you had to park a block away at a 10$/two hour lot you had to keep racing back to. I should have gotten there earlier though because I managed to hit it when all the authors I wanted to see were at a panel and I had to wait an hour with my arm falling off under the weight.

I got to see Leanna Renee Hieber (you've heard me mention her before, we hang in the same steampunk circles) plus a few of the other authors I usually buy from like Mindy McGinnis and Amanda Flower. I met a few others I've be given arcs from and a youngish woman I bought from last time who hugged me today. I got so many books here's an actual picture of my credit card afterward

Of course 40$ of that were two baby books for my cousin's baby shower (she asked for books vs cards) I knew they'd be that much. Mom about fainted when I told her. I bought stuff I might not usually do but it was good (as if I needed new books, as if I've read all the ones from LAST Ohioana) The one I'm looking forward to most is the 24/7 demon mart series book one.

I did make a trip up to Trader Joe's (In retrospect I should have gone to the one in Easton and I didn't because I go to the one in Dublin because I always go up there but I was right down town) My god the Scioto river was high and flooding in places. got stuff. Turned around went back downtown to German Village because I'm a dingdong who forgets it's Saturday and there is no prayer of me getting into Schmidt's Haus for their amazing cream puffs and I love their saur braten.

Not only do I have no prayer there's a birthday party and I think all of Columbus was invited based on the amount of people there but by some miracle a few blocks away the Old Mohawk bar/restaurant has an on street parking space open AND I can roll right in because it's the end one!!! It's been a bar for 91 years (for my non-American friends this is surprising in this country) and I used to go there in the 90s. Reuben and potato pancakes!!!

In spite of it being the weekend I decide to hit the casino. I hit a bonus on the first spin. Not a huge win but fun. Almost lost my first twenty, switched to a Linda Carter Wonder Woman machine, got it all back and left.

As much as I'd probably rather be Vaggie, as I sit in the casino with a beer in one hand and the other repeatedly slapping the respin button on the slot machine, I'm obviously Husk (I'm even grumpy and swear a lot) #HazbinHotel

So before I left Columbus I asked my parents do you want me to call you when I get home. No, you don't have to. No, because they planned to call me at 1130 at night and give me a heart attack. Thought someone died.

Froggy!

So my guess was right, they sold out online but NOT in person. YAY!! I almost didn't get there though because my GPS needs an exorcism. It took me somewhere strange outside of Loveland and I'm like why am I driving and driving? I thought this place was like 3 miles away. Also weird going along the river (the little miami I think) in Loveland there were the poorest houses ever along the water (I'm used to the rich folk hogging up water front).

I pull over. GPS says now the address doesn't exist (so where the fuck were you trying to take me?!?) I put in the Oasis convention center and boom there it is (with the address it says doesn't exist). I get there 10 to 10, it's already packed so they made money hand over fist.

Let me contrast this with Mothman. Both had speakers but Mothman is a street festival (overcrowded) and vendors jammed everywhere and speakers in the worst places you can imagine (never comfortable but to be fair the town doesn't HAVE nice venues for this) Loveland is only 2 years into this but they have this golf course convention center so this felt like any other pop culture con, comfortable with a huge ballroom over 50+ vendors and nice speaking rooms. I caught all the talks but one (I should have skipped the last one instead of that one)

I don't even remember them all but James Willis (who comes to my library to do ghost talks) gave the loveland frogman origin story, Sherri Brake (another research I've been talking to for years at Mothman) gave one on paranormal research and she broke my heart a little. She said the Lowe hotel in Point Pleasant is closed!! I had planned on a room for Mothman. I am so sad (their web page doesn't confirm this) She also does haunted Ireland trips but never when I can go.

One of the two talked about this cemetery in Centralia WV (not the burning one in PA) and said it had the weirdest headstones ever (which is something from them) I need to figure out how fat that it from me and pay it a visit if I can. There was a talk on UFOs too and one on the Melonheads and Dogman of Defiance OH.

The vendor room was great, TONS of art (No Dana you have no wall space), tons of jewelry (No Dana you have no neck space), tons of stickers (what is it with you and stickers in the last year and you NEVER put them on anything), some gothy art (I do one style of them) authors, comic book authors and more.

I got to take video of Frogman Piper Parade I wanted to be IN it but didn't make it in time (I joined in for the tail end)

I got to talk to the steampunk frogman and it got cut short when I spotted my friend from York. Didn't know Rain was going to be there. It was nice to see her.

I picked up a lot of stickers, stuff for friends for birthdays, some books (including a haunted cemetery book another friend just told me about and this author does ghost tours in Columbus. I need to do this. We talked about doing investigations in Wellston's cemetery) I got a cool felted mothman but what I shocked myself with was a pendant made of an epoxy encased morel mushroom. Honestly the ones in the shitake caps were prettier (let's face it morels look like turds) but this necklace wouldn't let me leave it there. I rather love it (I'm suddenly into mushrooms after a lifetime of not giving a damn, it's like my third piece of mushroom jewelry in 6 months)

I really enjoyed it. I'd come back next year.

I wanted to go to Teak for dinner. However it is in historic Loveland which is a) adorable b)full of unique eateries, bars and shops c) has no parking. There are public lots a couple blocks away but I felt like I was on a merry-go-round, me and several other cars going around and around the blocks with no joy. Finally I swing it into an apartment parking lot and pick another restaurant on my list (what? You don't pick out a half dozen restaurants complete with addresses everywhere you visit?)

GPS says address doesn't exist (screams inside my heart) I put in the name Pacific Kitchen and bing GPS finds it (complete with the nonexistent address) Anyone have holy water?

This restaurant is in a nearby town and it's in a little complex that reminds me of Mystique seaport in that the buildings are done to look like an old world town. The Pacific Kitchen is pan-Asian with little flags by the dishes so you know where they're from (mostly China, Korea and Japan). I picked crab cannollis which turns out to be skinny egg rolls filled like a crab rangoon (yum so damn good) and a Cambodian dish, steamed shrimp stuffed with garlic chili paste over japchae sweet potato noodles and veg. DELICIOUS. I could eat that garlic chili paste with a spoon. The only hiccups were the group of 6 couples and their 6 kids under the age of 3 there for a birthday party (seriously this place has no kids menu, it's expensive, why here?) seated next to me (the babies thankfully calmed down, their parents didn't) and the fact that the shrimp were butterflied but I didn't realize the entire shell was still on (You couldn't see it when you lifted them up) and I got a mouthful of shell on the first one. Lesson learned.

Returned to the hotel to find an entire boy's sports team in the lobby eating about 20 LaRosa's pizzas and have been running and screaming and chanting school spirit songs for the last 3 hours. In my head I'm on the roof with them singing I take one aside and yeet him off and 98 more boys on the wall....

I'm glad I said something about the ice cold shower last night. Oh...you're so far away from the hot water tank you need to let it run about 10 minutes to get it hot. Yep that was the case (but what a waste of water)

It's been between 50-60 for almost two weeks in Feb! Last night it snowed (only a wee bit here) and today it was a high of 27. That was perfect for the Gallia Winterfest. Now to be honest it wasn't much of a fest but it was what I needed because last night was lots of anxiety, full body shakes and then an early morning crash that I didn't wake up from until noon. I never sleep til noon!

It was a good thing to hyperfocus on and escape the things in my head. I didn't get the chance to upload the photos but there were about a dozen ice sculptures which were the best thing about it. there were a couple bounce things for kids and a man in a polar bear outfit. There was the skating rink for them and two food vendors one of which was an icee drink thing...um no. No vendors of any other kind. I think this was the first of the winter fests. It needed a bit of help but the sculptures was nice (and they turned it into a scavenger hunt for the little ones)

Before I went I went into Point Pleasant to Coffee Grinders to write. It's not the best coffee shop but it tries. I DID finish my SF horror. Now to somehow get it beta read and out in the next week. It's barely under the max word limit and probably needs to be a novella but eh, it's done and I'm happy.

I stopped at the school only to remember I had taken my keys out of my purse (because I'm smart) luckily a friend was there and they let me into the main office so I could finish my exam and print it just in case I get stuck in Chillicothe on Tuesday and I can't get back to give the test (someone else will step in). Sadly I missed another person there I needed to talk to. (better question why are so many of us there on our day off?)

Have some bonus music. I enjoyed this one. Think the title is Rose Red in German (not a language I'm good with)

In Logan there was a Full Wolf Moon Misfit Market and I wanted to go. But it was meant to be raining and for some reason I thought it was outside. The FB page was sparse with info but the vendor names led me to believe this was going to be fantasy/pagan related.

Logan is only 50 miles. It's certainly closer than Huntington (my closest mall) and Columbus but it feels SO. Much Further because the other two you're on straight shot roads but Logan is on a straight shot too...if you love curves. You really can't set cruise and go. So it feels so much further.

I said screw it, you're going. I couldn't find it at first because it was inside a building with NO numbers, no name, nothing but a tiny sign pointing at it. I'm glad I went. It benefited the animal shelter and the vendors were cool. I got some beautiful dice and picked up a tip. Okay on her end, she was short circuiting her partner's dice sales. There were metal ones. I've been eyeballing them in the past. I had them in my hand thinking these are heavy and I said so. She admitted not only are they heavy they tend to chip stuff up, especially dice towers. While I don't have a tower, I'm thinking good to know and no than you.

I found a locket with gears (nothing I couldn't have made on my own) but also had a mini first aid kit inside them (they sold survival jewelry and I'm a little miffed I didn't buy the fire starter too). As I'm the ship's doctor with my air group I had to have this. I found another metal/rock pendant must have. Silver and stones are my weakness. I got a flower agate hunk for Mom for Mother's day.

So all and all it was good BUT I had no idea another friend of mine was going and I missed her. She got to play with the animals. I didn't know they even had them there (that was a bit of a fail on their part)

It wasn't supposed to rain. It rained. It's now thunderstorming (and it was like 65 all day, tomorrow it's going to snow...) Neither of my friends who were supposed to meet me did, which fine. They had legit reasons and honestly I was so tired it was just as well.

The fair was nice. I've never been in the Dairy Barn in Athens to my shame. I've had friends selling and showing in there but I've never made it before. I've meant to go for years....It was actually a dairy barn in the 1800s early 1900s for the Athens Lunatic Asylum which was basically a self supporting village and the patients tended the cows there. It's a slate roofed historic building.

Today it was filled with the holiday bazar downstairs, book fair upstairs. I only bought some fudge and truffles in the bazar. I liked the carved birds but his prices were a tad high. I appreciate hand carved stuff and the life sized b irds I would have paid that but something meant to dangle from a rear view mirror, small as a finger...a little less so. It's probably a fair price but...

I got some contact info for some young people who collect plastic and render it into useful stuff like coasters and knobs and they would like our students to join them.

As for the books, I've never see this many poets...ever. There was like a half dozen. Romances, kids books but also a couple doing fantasy/urban fantasy and mystery. I got two mysteries and bought from 2 fantasy author (but they had a deal and basically got book 2 for 5$ so here's hoping it doesn't suck) One might fit the second chance romance thing in its subplot.

I got some more cards at Marshall's and at Kroger's fluffed up the cheese/meat board offering for when I go home. Also they were having a grand reopening sale with 25% off sushi (tomorrow's dinner) got a skeletonwitch pizza and came home. Definitely tired and then...

I found a huge ass bruise on my bad leg's inner calf. No lie, 3X 3 inches, blood red and purple. I don't remember hitting anything. No signs (now) of phlebitis. I think a varicose vein had a mischief.
