Writerly Ways
Dec. 18th, 2016 10:35 pmSuch as it is. I'm in the middle of packing and feeling sick at the same time (Apparently I can't even have a smidgeon of butter any more). Kanda agrees. He threw up all over the living room last night. Five piles of puke (that I found).
OMG, after searching for three days for a lost check from my insurance company, I just got the idea (literally just now) to see if I had it by the computer as this is where I communicate with them. And here it is. At least it's not lost and I'll take it back to my HSA in Jan.
So writerly ways....why reviews shouldn't be read by authors. You hear it all the time. DO NOT READ REVIEWS. And yet everyone I know does it. Actually the ones I'm going to share with you today are what can drive you nuts in a review situation...and it sort of looks like my writers group, hey you did this great (says 3 people) this thing here you did (the exact SAME thing) see it, that sucks (2 other people).
Witness: From Scattered Thoughts. who thought my world building was great and wants to return to my world (And I want her to! Who knows maybe I'll write one where they're in San Fran)
vs Divine Magazine. Where my world building sucks.
Okay to be fair both are actually great reviews but you see what I mean. This is the stuff that makes your head explode (more so in a writers group than in a review!) And to be fair, there isn't enough description in my story because a) there never is and b) I had to cut it for length.
And that's my whole problem in Blood Red Roulette. They keep saying there's no world building which is shit. There absolutely IS. From their examples they mean there's not enough description. True but you're telling me to cut it down so do I cut crucial scenes to add in description? I guess so.
But we are getting great reviews left right and center so if you want to see more head here.
Speaking of Blood Red and description and revising Betty must have been in my head because here are the links she sent me. so Apropos
sensory details
revising fun
revising
evocative telling
rival archetypes
And here is my day 18 advent musically offering. It's another Steampunk band. I'm not sure this is Steam Powered Giraffe's best work but it fits in with my theme of accepting people just how they are. This is about accepting and owning your flaws and problems and letting go of shame. The two younger members are twins and one of them is a transgendered woman. (and yes their steampunk identity is that of automatons)
