I feel like a real scientist
Mar. 8th, 2013 10:37 pmNot only did I get to listen to a fascinating lecture at work today on cloning novel genes to the vitamin B3 reduction pathway (which could lead to novel antibiotics in the future), my own experiment yielded results. Not unexpectedly, most of the homoepathetic medicines turns out to have zero function (at least in aqueous solution. We need to find a way to do it in lipid based solvents next year), one did have great antibiotic properties. WOOT. And everyone working on the case but one are lady scientists.
Which brings me to Happy International Women's Day, though happy is not quite the right term. It's dedicated more to helping women, many in very dire straits. And to that end, let me share these two things
One Woman some stunning visuals and a song about the struggle
Thank you Patrick Stewart Well said, well said indeed (and the statistics in this are terrifying).
So for all the women out there, dance, sister, dance. This is going to be me (right down to her last words)
This Granny dances better than I do now (too bad it's so dark)
And this woman raises money for cancer research by tap dancing. She has for 45 years. She's 92.
And this 93 year old yoga teacher and tango dancer is astonishing to me.
And to make up for last night's painful TBBT, women in science
I did brave that nausea pill I was afraid of. Tonight the nausea was so bad, I was almost in tears because I know why I was in such pain. I ate salad. It was a delicious salad filled with olives, anchovies, croutons and Italian greens, tinged with lemon and olive oil. I hate that I can't eat raw veggies any more. I like raw veggies. I want to eat them without throwing up. So far the pill isn't killing me so hopefully that's a good sign. The nausea is gone but that's not unexpected. This is what they give cancer patients on chemo to calm their nausea.
