Writerly Ways
Dec. 10th, 2017 01:36 pmI am not going to talk much about anything because after this semester my brain is fried but I will say this, if you sell an ARC someone gives you, you are not a nice person. That is not aimed at anyone here (mostly because the only people who even asked me for one are people I know) but rather a symptom of something that's cropped up in the last month.
A lot of authors are begging for 'street teams' or 'ARC teams' as they're called. This is because of Amazon's idiocy. If you don't have 50 reviews, your book gets buried (which is why I was asking for them). So do you send out 50 ARCS? No, that's excessive but getting a few reviews to get the ball rolling, that IS important. Most people won't even buy a book if it has zero stars and no reviews. But in making these teams, you're giving out books to people you don't know. I have two right now I need to finish. I rarely put myself on a team as I'm SO SLOW with ebooks. That said I would never sell the damn thing.
We're now seeing ARC readers putting the books up for sale to others, often even before the book is for sale by the publisher. I think we can all agree, that is wrong. I wouldn't mind so much if say ELD took the ARC I sent her and passed it on to a friend to read for free. Hopefully that would be another review for me. I WOULD mind if she sold it (not that she would but I need an example here).
So if you get on someone's street team, don't abuse their trust. It's hard enough surviving as an author as is.
Speaking of which I have sent out Dark Skies Over Deadwood (thanks to
tinhutlady for the title help!!) and I sent out Blood Red Roulette to DSP. I'm fully expecting another rejection on it but that's okay. I already know where to send it if they say no. I am feeling confident I can find a home for Arrigo and Luc.
And now for an onslaught of links (most thanks to Betty)
funding your book.
From MKF one that I really should print out and hang on my monitor for my nano novel - writing the stages of grief.
writing convincing death scenes THis one is actually very medical. I would have put cheyne-stokes respirations in here too.
writing thru the reality of life
small details strengthen stories (over doing it kills them, eyeballs the Kay Scarpetta thing I'm suffering through.)
time bomb plot device
conquer procrastination
mistakes you’re making with your website I'm probably making them all (then again I'm NOT cold emailing people using an email capture, that's a good way to turn people off, I don't care what this article says).

Yearly word count - I'm not sure how accurate this is. I've been terrible at a) writing this year b) keeping track. It's rather embarrassing.
93454 / 100000 words. 93% done!
