For the last year the Markay Theater has been doing shows. I had only been in the building a couple of times long before the renovations. Once as part of their renovation donation party & some times to see my Uni's art majors displays. I knew there is (or was) a writers group that met here but I admit to judging without meeting but when you hear this much negativity about how bossy the leader is....

Any how I've yet to see a show. Mostly they were bringing in country (which I like to a point) and gospel (which I do not). One of my coworkers (the head of the art dept) said a few weeks ago one could starve to death here waiting for art. I agree. If I want to hear a concert normally I have to drive to Athens to see smaller acts or all the way to Huntington and Columbus for big names and now that SO many concerts are not on a weekend, I just haven't gone. I don't want to be doing the 80 mile trips home at one in the morning or something and getting a hotel room adds another 100$ to the trip so I've not heard a lot of live music in the last decade.

I love live music. It's one of the reasons I'm disappointed my nano group doesn't hang out in the Donkey much any more. Any how, I knew Lone Raven from the Dublin Irish festival and a few of their cds. WHen I learned they were at the Markay tonight (thanks to me coming into the bar area of Arch & Eddies on Halloween), I knew I was going.

First off the renovations were great. The seats were wide and there is plenty of leg room. It's a sweet little art deco theater and Jackson has NO idea how lucky they are to have it given how small the audience was. It was a great two hours of music. They mostly do Irish music with other world music tossed in, most especially in the form of Neil Jacobs on 12 string guitar (which is apparently a bitch to keep in tune). He seems to be from the Balkans and has studied Rom and Spanish music in addition to the Bosnian. He also used his guitar as a rhythm instrument.

Tenaldi (from my nano) has decided he'd like to play a bodhran as his form of relaxation (I'll have to call it a hand drum or something).

THe lead singer's father also played an instrument I've never seen before. It looked like he was play a vase. It's an Udu drum from Nigeria. Very neat (there you go Tenaldi, play that).

They had a nice deal on cd's, I got the latest from both Lone Raven and Neil's solo. I was disappointed in the fact they were going to sign it but forgot sharpies and wouldn't do it in ink...okay then. I like that Neil's was the old fashioned jewel case with a cd liner with notes. I MISS that with music downloads.

Nano snippet Camristy shivered against the cold rock. Sunlight slivered down through the crack in the earth to his cell. How long had he been here? Time was a fractured thing. Inside the heavy stalactites that made up his cell, his tomb, he knew no hunger or thirst. Time had become unreal, moving outside this cave but within his prison, runes carved into the very rock holding him, Camristy remained unchanging, outside of time’s influence.
