“Of all the animals, the boy is the most unmanageable” - Plato
Morgan warbled into the microphone as if he thought he was on stage making a radio show. He was merely the latest cadet in a long string of them to give it a try. A week’s end and the early delivery of spy equipment hadn’t mixed well with teenaged boys who couldn’t resist playing with electronics.
Maes just wagged his head, narrowing his eyes at Roy. “Just look at what you’ve done.”
Roy’s eyes narrowed. “How is this my fault?”
“You’re the one who started it.” Maes jerked a thumb at the cadets goofing around.
Roy favored him with a look of a boy given a free-for-all in a candy store. “I can’t help it. I like playing with the gadgets.”
Maes snorted, rearranging a strand of hair. “You’re such a guy.”
“Oh, like you don’t like to play with the shiny buttons.” Roy gestured to the equipment.
“Best hope that these idiots don’t bust it before we have to plant it in the woods for the mission,” Mae replied with a cautionary wave of his hand.
Roy pouted. “You have a point...but I’m hoping to keep this reel to reel. Maybe we won’t need to tape over it.”
“Planning a career as a blackmailer?” Maes smirked, his eyes slicing over to the reel-to-reel tape.
“Always good to have a back up plan. Unless I become a State Alchemist, I’m not going to have a lot of money.” Roy grinned broadly.
“I’ll make a note of that. Just for the record I don’t have any money so don’t come after me,” Maes replied, shoving Roy lightly.
Roy rolled his eyes. “I think you’re safe as houses given the only secret I know would not be one I could use. Besides, you have no shame, which is key for a successful extortion.”
Maes chucked Roy’s shoulder and the smaller boy had to wonder, if in private, would that playing tap have been a kiss instead.
“So, Maes, are you going to sing?” Roy nudged him toward the mike. Grinning, Maes bounded over to the equipment and snagged the mike from Morgan. Encouraging Maes proved not to be Roy’s wisest move. Maes didn’t have even a hint of melody in his voice. Worse, not only couldn’t Maes sing, he was a total ham. Roy had to wonder about his tastes. Not only had he suddenly fallen for a man, it was a man that had none of the more refined qualities Roy preferred in his lady friends, such as they were. Could he even count Escha in that? Probably not.
Watching Maes dance around at the end of the mike cord’s tether, Roy wondered if his attraction - no, growing love, he had to be honest with himself - for the boy wasn’t the result of some sort of alchemic rebound he couldn’t remember but had been left insane in its wake. Seeing the strange dance Maes was doing now as their classmates joined in on the tuneless song, Roy shook his head. “Yes, insane.”
Much to the dismay of the other boys, Maes started dismantling the equipment when he was done. “What’s that look for, Roy?”
Roy bit back a laugh. “You’re insane, you know that?”
“I’m normal. You’re just stuffy,” Maes shot back.
“Stuffy?” Roy managed to sound exceedingly offended.
“I would have said boring,” Morgan called, helpfully.
“Oh, he’s not boring,” Maes replied, waving off the other boy. “He gets damn lively if you interrupt his studying.”
“I think that’s the definition of boring,” Morgan argued.
“He let you play with the gadgets, didn’t he?” Maes countered.
“Good point,” Morgan agreed, punching Roy’s arm lightly. “You’re okay, Mustang.”
“Thanks for the affirmation,” Roy said wryly. “Is it stuffy of me to ask you to help me lug this stuff back to our room, Maes?”
“Yeah, give the little guy a hand, Hughes.” Morgan said, making sure to head off before he got roped into helping.
“Planned on it,” Maes said, gathering some of the equipment up.
Roy raised an eyebrow. Who were they calling little? He fished a chalk piece out of his pocket and sketched an array on the side of the bulky equipment he was trying to move; he used it to make wheels. He pushed briskly past Maes.
“Wheels?” Maes’ topaz eyes slotted. “That’s cheating!”
“To use the alchemy I study so hard to master? How’s that cheating?” Roy asked airily as he wheeled along.
“Why don’t I get wheels?” Maes asked.
“This little guy needed a helping hand,” Roy replied with a smirk.
“You’re being a bastard,” Maes growled.
“Don’t know if I can do it again since you never let me study.” Roy could barely keep his grin to himself.
“Keep this up, you’ll have all the time in the world to study,” Maes promised ominously.
Roy shot him a worried look then hurriedly sketched an array on Maes’ electronics to give him wheels. “Happy?”
“Yes, I see I’m a better blackmailer than you.” Maes grinned at him. “And I’ll be thrilled if you figure out a way to make it easier to haul this junk into the woods.”
“Already thinking on it,” Roy replied. Once inside their room, Roy stowed his equipment then picked up the heavy tome that Mr. Hawkeye had just sent. The young man curled up on his bed with his book.
Maes tried to lower the book and steal a kiss but Roy slid down, plastering the book to his face. “Um, Roy, that’s not very inviting.”
“I’m trying to study,” Roy protested from under the book.
“Of course you are. That’s all you ever do,” Maes said, hemming Roy against the wall, an arm planted one either side of him.
Roy wished he were a cat so he could just pour out and slink off. “We’re going to be out in the woods for two days and one night. I won’t be able to study then.”
“You’re not packing that damn book with you?” Maes’ eyes widened in shock.
“Are you insane? I’m not risking my alchemy texts on a survival trip. So, you’ll have me all to yourself out there. You can distract me to your hearts content,” Roy said, thoroughly looking forward to being distracted. Studying tonight was going to be difficult.
Maes backed off, rubbing his chin. “I like the sound of that.”
“Just me, you a tent and electronics equipment we need to be sure isn’t recording us,” Roy replied.
“Fair enough but first a little taste of what you’re passing on.” Maes darted in and kissed Roy hard and fast, moving away far too quickly for Roy’s tastes. Now Maes had him completely distracted and he was half sure that’s what his roommate wanted. Fetching his bath kit, Maes just favored Roy with a smirk. “Have fun with your book, Roy.”
Roy contemplated tossing the book at the door once Maes was gone. “Damn tease!”
“Okay, the sleds on the bottom of the electronics were a good thing,” Maes said, lugging his collection of equipment over a root.
“Just your luck I’m as smart as I am good-looking,” Roy replied, dead-panned.
Maes laughed. “And so humble.”
“Always.” Roy smirked. “How much further do we have to go with this junk?”
”Not much further. We’ll leave crossing the river and installing it on the target base until it gets good and dark,” Maes replied, casting an eye skywards at the slowly setting sun.
“We should look for a place to make camp before we try that,” Roy said, sweating heavily under the pack he carried on his back, not to mention the equipment they were hauling. This was all the more reason to pass his State Alchemy exam. He wasn’t cut out for grunt work. Neither was Maes. It was probably arrogant of him to feel so superior but he did. Roy knew he was highly intelligent. One didn’t become an alchemist otherwise. Maes was just as intelligent, if not more so. Roy didn’t doubt that both of them had big futures in the military.
That thought brought Roy up short as he stumbled after Maes through the underbrush. Roy was falling in love with Maes; he knew it and it unsettled him. They had kissed. Hell, they had even gotten each other off just two days ago but Roy suddenly realized he didn’t know Maes’ plans for the future. Maybe he wasn’t looking for a big military career. Maybe Maes had other plans and the military was only a stepping-stone to something else.
It didn’t even sink in that all of his fresh anxiety came from a desire to keep Maes in his life. Roy went sullen as they picked a spot for their tent. While Maes gathered firewood, Roy did his best to camouflage their camp site just in case someone from the school was critiquing them from a distance. No one was supposed to be but Roy didn’t trust that.
He flinched, feeling a hand on his shoulder. Roy was touchy about people coming up behind him. It was his mother’s fault. Roy looked back at Maes who leaned in to sneak a kiss. Roy was always surprised at how much Maes seemed to love touching him.
“What’s wrong?” Maes asked when he ended the kiss.
Was he that easy to read? Roy didn’t want to think so. That was a weakness. “Nothing’s wrong.”
Maes clasped onto Roy’s shoulders, drawing him into another kiss. “Yes, there is.”
Roy pulled away. “Later.”
Maes cocked his head to the side. “What later?”
“This.” Roy ran a finger over Maes’ lips.
”You promised to let me distract you,” Maes pointed out with a little pout that Roy wanted to kiss off his face.
“Once we get back from planting the equipment. You get me too distracted now and we’ll fail in our objective,” Roy retorted.
Maes wrinkled his nose. “Good point. Let’s get dinner then maybe you’ll feel like talking.”
Roy sighed and followed Maes out of the tent. His friend opened the rations up and handed him his box. Fire wasn’t needed to cook the rations. They were nasty, well preserved, canned food items designed to go anywhere and require no preparations. They’d keep a person alive but not happy. The fire would be set later for warmth.
Roy opened the little canned beef ration and tried to gag it down. “Do you think about the future at all, Maes?”
Maes’ topaz eyes picked up a contemplative hue. “Is that what got you down?”
Roy held his nose and tried another bite of rations. “I’m not down. I’m contemplative.”
“No offense, buddy, but with you it’s hard to tell. You have this worried little expression all the time,” Maes said, reaching over to tap the little ‘V’ between Roy’s eyebrows. “I guess you think a lot about the future.”
Roy shrugged. “Maybe too much so.”
Maes wrinkled his nose at a hunk of almost-beef. “Tell me about it.”
“You already know about me wanting to be a State Alchemist. If won’t happen unless I learn Flame alchemy,” Roy admitted unhappily.
As they ate, Roy launched into his desires as alchemy defined them and told Maes of all his thoughts about their country and what he was willing to do for it. Maes seemed to think along Roy’s lines, which came as a huge relief to Roy. By the time the rations were gone, they had gotten into a lively discussion on how to fix the world. Roy was fairly sure if it were left in their capable hands, it wouldn’t take long for Amestris to be a better place.
Roy knew their conduct in this sector would be monitored to see if they could plant the equipment without being caught in the act, and just as importantly hide it in a way that it wouldn’t be found out. He looked at the timer. The recorders would kick on in sequence, keeping them almost continuous and made it so he and Maes wouldn’t need to keep going back to change out a tape every hour. They’d only need to be back every fourth hour.
“Got the kilohertz set up right?” Maes asked, looking at the specs to double-check the frequency they needed.
“All done.” Roy sketched an array on the rock. “You ready?”
“Yes.” Maes stepped away from the electronics.
Roy slapped a hand to the array and the rock grew around the equipment. Someone would need to be very astute to spot it now. The only things exposed were the mikes closer to the enemy encampment.
“Neat trick.” Maes came over to him. “Does this have to remain?” He pointed to the chalked array. Roy shook his head and watched his friend erase the mark. The area looked undisturbed. Roy was surprised that Maes thought about the array at all; yes, definitely a bright boy.
They picked their way back to their encampment by moonlight until they were a good distance through the woods. They didn’t want demerits if someone saw and ‘captured’ them. Roy couldn’t wait to be able to turn on the flashlight. His feet skidded on a branch in the dark and he would have landed on his butt if Maes hadn’t caught him. Maes set Roy on his feet, steadying him. “You okay?” Maes asked.
“Damn branch,” Roy grumbled, his face on fire.
“Not a country boy are you?”
Roy could hear the grin in Maes’ voice. “Not at all.”
Maes backed Roy against a tree. “Bet I could change your mind.”
Maes’ mouth sealed over Roy’s as he pressed Roy against the bark. While Maes’ tongue pulsed in and out of Roy’s mouth, his hand cupped Roy through his pants. It felt so good, too damn good. “Maes, please stop.”
“You don’t like it?” Maes sounded surprised but not hurt.
Roy kissed him, needing him to believe that it wasn’t a matter of not liking it but liking it too well. “We’re still too close to the enemy encampment. What if someone is monitoring us?”
Maes’ fingers squeezed Roy through his uniform trousers. “I suppose you have a point.”
“And if you keep doing this, I won’t be able to walk and, with my luck, I’m standing in poison ivy,” Roy moaned, feeling his body reacting to Maes’ handling.
His friend laughed and let him go. They turned on their flashlights and made it back to camp. Roy set the fire, wishing he could do so with just a subtle manipulation of the air. It would be so much easier. Teacher could do it and someday, yes someday, so would he and then he’d have most everything he wanted. Roy sat back from the blaze he had started, listening to the crackle of the wood. It was relaxing. If there was one thing he did like about the country, it was the opportunity to have bonfires.
Maes’ fingers buried themselves in Roy’s silky hair as the taller boy tilted Roy’s head back. “I remember a promise of allowing me to distract you.”
Roy wondered again if someone would be watching their camp in spite of what the instructors had said. Hormones won out over sense and he rested back against Maes’ thighs. “There was? Remind me.”
Sitting down next to him, Maes captured Roy’s chin, drawing him in for a kiss. Maes’ tongue flicked over Roy’s lips. “Remember now?”
“My mind must be going. I’m still not sure about this promise.” Roy smiled.
“Stubborn, you are.” Maes’ reminding kiss was harder, longer driving all thoughts and stray worries from Roy’s mind. Maes peeled up Roy’s shirt then attacked his neck with lips and teeth. Roy shuddered at the touch, feeling the warmth of the fire on his bared back. He clung to Maes’ as his friend’s hungry mouth licked up over his cheeks and suckled on his earlobes. Roy sighed, and Maes, sensing he had found a good erogenous spot, redoubled his efforts.
Moving down Roy’s body, Maes’ lips captured one of Roy’s hardened nipples. This was new, something they hadn’t tried before. Roy’s hand scrabbled with Maes’ shirt, trying to get it off. Maes broke contact just long enough to allow for it to slide over his head, before catching a nipple with his teeth, tugging gently. Roy groaned, his legs falling open, allowing Maes better access to his whole body. He felt amazingly hard, his erection digging into Maes’ belly.
”Damn, Maes…” Roy panted, looking around at the campsite. The fire had made a sweat break out all over his back – or was that Maes’ fault – and the rough ground didn’t seem inviting when it came to taking off his pants, which he really needed to do. “Too much.”
Maes sat back and nodded at the tent. “Get inside.”
Roy got up clumsily and went into the tent. He sat down, tearing at his boots to get them off. Laughing, Maes helped him then Roy did the same for him. He swarmed into Maes’ lap, kissing him voraciously, their teeth clicking against one another. Maes tugged Roy’s pants down, his hands purposely skimming along his buttocks. Holding him tight, Maes maneuvered Roy onto his back against their bedrolls. There was a momentary sensation of panic, utterly involuntary, when Roy found himself under his friend.
“You okay?” Maes whispered, nipping at Roy’s ear.
“Yeah,” Roy said, whimpering as Maes ran a thumb over the head of his cock.
Maes caught Roy’s wrists, bringing his arms over his head. His uniform trousers were rough against Roy’s inflamed flesh as Maes bucked his hips against Roy’s. For a moment, Roy wondered about himself, how he could so easily submit to this position then understood he trusted Maes implicitly. He wanted to be exactly where he was. Maes’ mouth met his again as he rocked against Roy.
“Maes, get my kit. It’s next to you,” he murmured when the kiss broke.
“Huh?”
”The alchemy kit.”
Maes reached over to get the bag of chemicals and whatnots Roy had brought with him while Roy undid Maes’ belt buckle so he could free him from his trousers. He stroked Maes’ erection once teasingly, grinning as the other boy shuddered. “Do I want to know what you’re planning to do with the alchemic chemicals? I like all my parts the way they are, just so you know.”
“Don’t be strange,” Roy laughed. He opened the kit and took out a jar. “I brought lotion and just hid it in here.”
Laughing as well, Maes took the jar. “You really aren’t just another pretty face.”
“I have many talents,” Roy assured him as Maes slicked his fingers up.
“Show me,” Maes entreated as he maneuvered them onto their sides.
It took a moment to figure out the best tangle of limbs since they hadn’t tried it this way before. Maes’ big, oiled hand went around both their cocks at once, rubbing them together. Roy moaned at the unique sensation, thrusting into Maes’ hands.
“Good?” Maes whispered.
Roy’s answer was one of wordless delight. Maes’ strong and steadily increasing pace quickly took Roy to that wonderful spot of ecstasy where the world filtered away and all there was left was pure bliss. He felt his hot cum trickling down his belly then heard Maes’ groans as he too, spilled.
They lay limp in each other’s arms until some strength came back into their bodies, little kisses and words neither would remember passing between them. Finally, they reluctantly moved and cleaned up. Maes grabbed a blanket and their pillows, heading back outside, naked.
“What are you doing?” Roy asked.
“Come here.” Maes spread the blanket down next to the fire and sat down. “Look up.”
Roy sat next to him, gazing up at the stars. “Teacher’s home is in the country. There are stars like this there. I miss this view in the city,” he admitted.
Maes laid down, his fingers toying with Roy’s spine. “So do I. Lay back. We’ll watch the heavens for a while.”
Roy complied, snuggling against Maes, warmed by the fire as well. This was a little bit of heaven here. Beauty all around them and trying something new with his lover. Roy still didn’t know where this path was leading him but it felt very right. Soon enough they would have to go back to where they hid the equipment to change out the tapes and be soldiers again. However, for now, he was content to think they were the only two people in the world and this all existed just for them.
