i'm not the world's best at bonsai-ing. I always feel BAD when i have to cut the trees back. It's like they're screaming. And the ficus bleeds white sap. Lots of it. Drip Drip Drip. Gah. It's like a treehouse of horrors. The Conservancy in Columbus is offering a class. 100$. I'm not sure if that's for one night or what. Either way, I think i'll just be a mad trimmer.

And then you have to root bind the poor buggers. I sort of feel sorry for them. This is such a brutal ancient art...that's supposed to bring you peace of mind.

I had to get stern with the rosemary too. Half of it is dead so I was trimming it up. Of course me sitting on the porch means I MUST want to pet Roy the outdoor cat. These leads to him rubbing on me (eww ticks, fleas) or his head where my hands are heedless of scissors.

Then finally I stop to pet his belly while i talk to mom on the phone Well Roy's a boy cat. Sure enough he gets uh...overstimulated shall we say. I tell mom and in one breathe we both say, men! There's just no safe way to touch 'em.

You can torture cute boys but draw the line at little trees. You are one weirdo woman, Dana. *giggles*

And ROY! Put that thing away!

Bonsai sounds like the plant version of foot binding. Weird.

Well, why would you be on the porch if not to pet Roy? You hafta look at it from the kitty point of view. ;)

Sure enough he gets uh...overstimulated shall we say. I tell mom and in one breathe we both say, men! There's just no safe way to touch 'em.

*sigh* Tell me about it!

Yep, Lupin's the same way. And of course, brilliant me, I had to get a mostly white cat to shed all over my mostly black wardrobe.

I don't even want to think about touching men right now. Feh.

Can't blame you for that. I hadn't planned on it myself (well, I was planning on getting a cat, but not necessarily a white one), but he was the last kitten left in the litter and *so* cute. You know how it goes.

that's sort of how i got Iktomi. I went to the cat shelter to get a kitten. I wanted a female. They had three, calico sisters that someone had already claimed and one abused one with a shattered leg they were fixing.

Then this black boy kitty grabbed my shorts through the bars of his cage and savaged them and I decided he was for me

I have got to remember to plant minette basil to make fake bonsai from. Since it's naturally miniature I'll only have to shape it, and unlike the ficus it won't drip sap everywhere (one good reason to _never_ bonsai Confederate jasmine). I'd like to have a go at making the roots grow down over a rock, but I'm not sure how that's done. It looks incredible, though. Maybe I'll go to the library and get a bonsai book. There should be something in there about training roots over rocks.

there is. I tried Root over rock twice. Killed one (but I think that had more to do with slamming it into the wheelwell of the car going 50 taking it home) and the ficus which SHOULD have done it wouldn't (these ARE wal-mart bonsai's. I should be thrilled they ain't dead yet. I need to get a bonsai book myself. I'm just playing monkey see monkey do

Bonsai always seems a bit cruel to me. I wanted a small bonsai once (yes, I know they're all small, but I wanted a young one) and couldn't find one locally so my husband ordered it off the net. When it arrived, it was a twig. Yes - a twig. We duly planted it, but of course it died. I was very inexperienced… :o(

Men. The best way is to get it over with as quickly as possible, then sneak away while they're sleeping. I have unintentional bonsai. The trees just won't grow. I have a lovely apple one in the back corner of the yard.

snort. Poor little apple (which is actually an acceptable bonsai-tree as it turns out)
