Happy things - I got my book on tantric sex, I didn't get to work backstage and that's happy because I am so freaking busy. 11pm and I'm just getting done with work. Basically they brought their own hands and only wanted us to give out tickets. Yeah...i passed on that but it was for the best

had a scheduling meeting today and honestly the consultant said something to me that bothered me. SHe is a huge proponent of online courses. All well and good but I didn't like her reasoning for it. Kids today are used to 24/7 info flow and we need to change with the times and give them asynchronous classes. So um we bend over backwards and allow the students to do whatever they want when they want and when they get out into the workforce WHAT happens then? How many jobs out there are going to change to 'do it whenever you feel like it so long as it's done by this date?' Am I looking at this wrong? I see this as making a HUGE problem and I already know people like this, who are ten years older than the crew she's talking about and they have been fired from multiple jobs for coping this exact attitude. Why should i get up and get to work on your schedule? I'm going to do it on mine.

Asynchronous learning is rough. Online is already a challenge.

...And I say this being the Marketing person for a division that specializes in asynchronous online courses...

It takes a lot of self-discipline. There's a reason students and working stiffs have been kept on a schedule for the last...forever.

Yes, and it's not as though self-discipline is a.. umm... growing trend.

yeah no kidding and online courses tak e a LOT of that and it only hits ONE learning style. if you can't read and learn you're screwed. If you're an auditory learner you will fail miserably at this

that's the whole point. you need to cover labs at certain times and just how the heck can you REALLy get a lab experinece on line. you can do a simulation but does that prep you for ACTUALLY using the equipment. no way in hell

No, I don't think you're at all unreasonable -- kids are not learning they HAVE to conform anymore, and they're being sorely disappointed when they get into the workplace. Of the four youngsters we've hired, I'd say only one really has any real work ethic, two are getting there, and one...? Well, let's just say I think I'm going to be getting the bulk of his performance cash, because I am always on time and do my job, whereas he just... hangs. And he's really, really SMART, too, so it bugs me that he just WON'T do a good job...

Sorry about that! Didn't mean to go off in your journal! *g*

no problem that's what that whine was for. I mean DAMN. Seriously I have one student who was getting 100% on everything then just stopped coming. It's like you're SMART. Why are you doing this?

it's probably time for employers to start showing these youngesters how disposable they really are

My supervisor was pretty blunt about saying those who deserve the bonuses/raises will get them, and those that don't... won't. (My Company doesn't fire anyone unless there's REALLY good cause, and so far "slacker" isn't just cause. But they don't make things nice and cozy for those who don't work for it.)
