Flowers were the one thing Mustang never wanted for, not with his aunt’s connections. The brilliant blues of the bouquet his ‘sister’ had given him stood out starkly against the dingy white of Hughes’ headstone.
“We did it, Hughes. We beat them. The boys got their bodies back. Well, Ed’s still missing one leg, but all things considered, it’s still pretty amazing. Just thought you’d want to know.” As the memories flooded back, Roy felt weak. He was probably alone in the cemetery but just in case, he went to his knees and started weeded around the headstone. He couldn’t be seen shaking. “I lost my vision for a while. You don’t want to know what I had to do to get it back. I didn’t make it to the very top. Grumman did. It’ll probably be down to Olivia Armstrong and me next time, but we have so much work to do to fix this country.”
His voice broke and Roy had to stop and take a deep breath. “You were supposed to be there to help me do this.” How weak he sounded. He needed his best friend. Alchemists often ended up with so few friends, something else that needed to change. Nothing would ever replace Hughes. He had always been there, knowing what to say. In Roy’s darkest moments, Maes would have a quip at the ready, driving the gloom away. His sharp wit and excellent mind always kept Roy’s own intellect perfectly honed. “I miss you.”
