Even though I'm getting more sure I have pleurisy, I headed out to the trolley museum with the parents as part of the 'things I'm going to do' for my birthday. It's relatively close and you know me and historical stuff.
In spite of it being 102 in the Pittsburgh area in JUNE with 90% humidity (because we have to out do Arizona on being miserably hot) we had a good time. There are only two of particularly Pittsburgh trolley car and they own both. We rode out on that one for a couple of miles. When we came back we rode the actual Street car from the movie, Street Car Named Desire out to the trolley barn where we saw a few precursors to the trolley, along the lines of a British omnibus, to wooden ones, to a private car with kitchen and bath and snow sweepers.
In the museum side of things where they had photos and videos they also had a grey tabby who insisted on being petted. He just jumped up in a chair and wouldn't take no for an answer.
The downside to the day, across from the museum, a huge and beautiful home from the 1880s had been destroyed and UGLY high end townhouses were put up in its place, stupid ugly ones where they have sliding glass doors to balconies that they never put up so there's wood over them. I don't even get that.
Street Car Name Desire
This is from Brazil. They allowed kids to eat lunch on it which was pretty cool.
Inside the Pittsburgh car
as is this
and its seats are made of rattan
This is a mule drawn trolley from 1909 used for decades, the last mules retired when their driver did, mules named Sarah & Jane (and the WHo fans know why I smile).
A wooden one from the 19-teens. The blue mist in the front window I saw moving just as I snapped this but it wasn't there when I looked at it.
The private car with the bathroom.
snowsweeper
On Desire (which is from New Orleans naturally) Mom
Dad
Me (ugh, rumpled mess)
Quiz time. The seats on this car are reversible (as the trolley only drives from one end unlike the others). So why did I take a picture of the brass fixture (the one with the depression)? Any guesses as to what it is?
